Version History

Version history keeps earlier versions of your Office and Markdown files, so you can see how a file changed and bring back an earlier version at any time. Every save creates a version, whether a person, AI Chat or an agent made the change. Restoring a version never erases anything: the restored content is saved as a new version on top.

Opening Version History​

You can open version history from several places:

  • In the file header — Open the file and click the Version history button, next to AI changes. In presentations you can also use File → Version history….
  • From AI changes — Click AI changes in the file header, then Version history at the bottom of the list.
  • In Drive — Right-click the file (or open its menu) and choose Version history.

What Each Version Shows​

Each version in the list shows:

  • When it was saved.
  • Who changed the file: people, or for example Ana with AI Chat, or an agent. Versions made by AI are labelled AI edited, so you can find them quickly.
  • The version the file is on now is marked Current version. A restored version is marked Restored from an earlier version.

Restoring a Version​

  1. Open Version history.
  2. Find the version you want to go back to and click Restore.
  3. In Restore this version?, confirm. The file goes back to how it was on that date.

The restored content is saved as a new version, and Copera shows Version restored. Everyone who has the file open sees the change right away. The version you were on before the restore stays in the list, so you can restore it later if you need to.

Restoring needs edit access to the file. Anyone who can open the file can look at its version history.

How Long Versions Are Kept​

Copera keeps earlier versions for 30 days, and always keeps at least the 20 most recent versions of each file, even when they are older than that. A version that is no longer kept shows No longer kept and can't be restored.

When a file is deleted permanently, its versions are deleted too.

Version History and AI Changes​

Version history is the safety net behind AI changes. Most AI edits can be reverted one by one from the AI changes list. For very large AI edits, the list offers Restore the version before this edit, which uses version history to bring the file back as a new version.

Does restoring a version delete the newer versions?​

No. Restoring saves the old content as a new version. The newer versions stay in the list.

Which files have version history?​

Documents (.docx), spreadsheets (.xlsx), presentations (.pptx) and Markdown files (.md) edited in Drive.

Can I see who changed the file?​

Yes. Each version shows who made the changes, including when it was AI Chat or an agent.
