Voice Settings
The Voice Settings page lets you configure how Bankai processes your speech, which modes are available, and how the desktop app behaves. Access it from the AI section in the sidebar by clicking the gear icon next to your Bankai name, or navigate directly to Settings → Voice.
Bankai is a personal feature, so your choices here are yours — they follow you across every device and workspace you sign in to. See Across Your Devices below.
The page is organized into collapsible cards: General, Modes, Shortcuts, History & Storage, Bankai Notes, and — in the desktop app only — Desktop Settings and Desktop Appearance.
Master Toggle
The Enable Bankai toggle (in the General card) is the top-level control for all Bankai features. When it is off, nothing else runs — shortcuts will not trigger recording and the floating widget will not appear. Every other setting on the page stays disabled until Bankai is on.
For accounts created after Bankai's launch, the master toggle starts off — Bankai is opt-in, so you turn it on when you are ready. Longtime users keep it on. You can flip it any time from this page or the profile menu.
Modes
The Modes card is where you choose which Bankai modes are available. Turn each on or off independently:
| Mode | What it does |
|---|---|
| Dictation | Speak and have your words appear at the cursor as formatted text. |
| Ask | Ask a question and paste the answer at the cursor. |
| Commands | Trigger any Copera command with your voice. |
| Chat | Have a back-and-forth voice conversation. |
| Vision | Take a screenshot and ask about what is on your screen. See Vision Mode. |
| Omni | Let Bankai route your voice to the right mode automatically. |
| Bankai Notes | Record meetings and get an AI summary. See Bankai Notes. |
Mix and match freely — for example, you might keep Dictation and Commands but turn off Chat. Learn what each mode does in Voice Modes.
Dictation Formatting
The Dictation Formatting toggle (in the General card) controls whether the AI cleans up your dictation — adding punctuation, fixing capitalization, removing filler words, and detecting lists. When it is off, you get the raw transcription exactly as spoken.
If you set an Output language different from what you speak (see below), formatting is required for the translation to work — so the formatting toggle locks on while a translation target is selected.
Bankai Name (Trigger Word)
Your Bankai name is the word you speak in Omni mode to signal that you want an AI response or a command rather than dictation. The default is "Bankai."
You can change this to any word or short phrase:
- Click the pencil icon next to your current Bankai name.
- Type the new trigger word.
- Press Enter or click away to save.
The change is saved automatically and takes effect immediately.
Choosing a Good Trigger Word
Pick a word that:
- You would not say naturally while dictating (to avoid false triggers).
- Is easy to pronounce clearly.
- Is distinct from common words in your language.
Some users personalize their trigger word with a name, a power word, or an inside joke.
Default Language
Select the language Bankai uses for speech recognition. Options include:
- Auto-detect (default) --- Bankai determines the language automatically from your speech.
- English, Spanish, Portuguese, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Chinese.
Auto-detect works well for most users. Set a specific language if you frequently switch between languages and want to ensure Bankai always listens in your primary language.
Output Language and Real-Time Translation
The Output language setting controls the language Bankai delivers in — which can be different from the language you speak. This turns Bankai into a real-time translator:
- Same as input (default) --- Bankai keeps your words in whatever language you spoke.
- Pick a language --- Bankai translates what you say into that language before pasting it.
For example, speak in English with the output language set to Portuguese, and your dictation lands as Portuguese text — perfect for writing to a teammate in their language.
Translating to a language other than your input requires Dictation Formatting to be on, so the formatting toggle locks on while a translation target is selected. If you turn formatting off, the output language automatically snaps back to "Same as input."
Custom Vocabulary
Add domain-specific words to improve transcription accuracy. This is particularly useful for:
- Product names --- "Copera," "DocSign," custom product names your team uses.
- Technical terms --- industry jargon, acronyms, or specialized vocabulary.
- People's names --- team member names that might not be recognized by default.
- Company-specific terms --- internal project codenames, team names, abbreviations.
To add a word:
- Type the word in the vocabulary input field.
- Press Enter or click Add.
To remove a word, click the X button on its chip.
Your custom vocabulary is personal to you — the words you add improve your own transcription without affecting anyone else's.
Words Bankai Learns Automatically
Bankai also builds your dictionary for you. When it notices an unusual term in your speech — a name or specialized word it had to work to get right — it can add that word to your personal vocabulary automatically, so it gets it right next time. When this happens, the session shows a small "added to dictionary" tag in your Bankai History.
History and Storage
The History & Storage card controls how long Bankai keeps your recordings and transcripts, and how much disk space recordings can use. See History & Analytics for the full breakdown of retention and the clear-history option.
Bankai Notes
The Bankai Notes card holds the meeting-detection options for the Bankai Notes meeting recorder — whether Bankai should notice when a meeting app starts using your microphone, how often it checks, and which apps to ignore.
Desktop Settings
These settings are only visible when using the Copera desktop app. They are stored locally on the device you are using.
Microphone
Choose which microphone Bankai records from, or leave it on the system default. If Bankai cannot detect any microphones, this is also where you will see a heads-up to check your audio devices or app permissions.
Copy to Clipboard
When enabled, dictation results are automatically copied to the system clipboard in addition to being pasted at the cursor. This is useful if you want to paste the text into applications outside of Copera.
Show Widget When Inactive
Controls whether the floating voice widget stays visible when you are not actively recording. When enabled, the widget remains on screen as a persistent indicator that Bankai is ready. When disabled, the widget only appears during recording and processing.
Sound Controls
A set of switches lets you keep things quiet while you work:
| Setting | What it does |
|---|---|
| Mute system audio during recording | Silences your computer's audio output while Bankai is capturing your microphone, so background sound does not bleed into the recording. |
| Mute dictation sounds | Turns off the start and stop sounds when you begin or end a recording. |
| Mute thinking sound | Turns off the ambient sound Bankai plays while the AI is processing. |
Keyboard Shortcuts
All keyboard shortcuts can be customized in the desktop app, in the Shortcuts card. See Keyboard Shortcuts for the full reference and customization instructions.
Desktop Appearance (Answer Bubble)
When Bankai pastes or shows an AI answer, it appears in a floating bubble over your screen. The Desktop Appearance card (desktop app only) lets you tune how that bubble reads:
| Setting | What it does | Default |
|---|---|---|
| Bionic Reading on AI answers | Bolds the first letters of each word so your eye can skim long replies faster. | Off |
| Answer text size | How big the answer text renders — Small, Medium, or Large. | Medium |
| Answer line spacing | Breathing room between lines — Compact, Comfortable, or Spacious. | — |
| Auto-dismiss after | How long the bubble stays up before closing itself — 5 seconds, 15 seconds, 30 seconds, 1 minute, 2 minutes, or Until dismissed. | — |
A thin countdown bar at the top of the bubble shows the remaining time before it closes — and it pauses while your cursor is over the bubble, so you never lose an answer you are still reading.
Across Your Devices
Bankai is a personal feature, so your setup follows you. When you sign in on another computer — or switch workspaces — these come with you automatically:
- Your selected mode for each workspace.
- Whether you have completed onboarding, and which milestones you have already celebrated.
- The master Enable Bankai state (a single switch that applies everywhere).
- Your output language preference.
Device-specific choices — your selected microphone, the answer-bubble appearance, and your custom keyboard shortcuts — are stored on each device, so you can tune them per computer.
If you work in a multilingual team, set your Default Language to Auto-detect and add frequently used terms from all languages to your Custom Vocabulary. This gives Bankai the best chance of understanding you regardless of which language you switch to mid-sentence.
