Creating a Board

Copera gives you four ways to create a new board, so you can start with whatever approach fits your situation best --- whether you want a blank canvas, a proven template, imported data from a file, or a migration from another tool.

Opening the Create Board Dialog

To create a new board, click the + button next to the Boards heading in the Collaborate section of the sidebar. This opens the Create Board dialog, which presents four options:

OptionDescription
From ScratchStart with a blank board and build your structure from the ground up
IntegrationImport a board from Monday.com, including columns, rows, and structure
TemplateChoose from system templates, shared templates, or your own saved templates
ImportRestore a board from a Copera backup file (.bcp format)

Creating a Board from Scratch

Choose From Scratch when you want full control over the board structure from the start.

Step 1: Name Your Board

Enter a descriptive name for your board in the Name field. This is the only required field. Choose a name that clearly communicates the board's purpose, such as "Q1 Marketing Plan" or "Engineering Sprint Board".

You can also click the emoji picker next to the name field to assign an icon that makes the board easy to identify in the sidebar.

Step 2: Add a Description (Optional)

Use the Description field to provide additional context about the board's purpose, scope, or usage guidelines. This helps team members understand what the board is for when they open it.

Step 3: Add Members

Use the Members selector to invite workspace members or entire teams to the board. Search by name and click to add participants. Each member is added with the default Member role, which you can change later from the board settings.

You can add:

  • Individual users --- Search by name and add them one by one.
  • Teams --- Add an entire team so all current members gain access.

Step 4: Create

Click the Create Board button. Copera creates the board with a default table and navigates you to it automatically. You can then start adding columns, creating rows, and customizing views.

Creating a Board from a Template

Choose Template when you want to start with a predefined structure. Templates include pre-configured tables, columns, views, and sometimes sample data.

Template Categories

Templates are organized into three categories:

CategoryDescription
System TemplatesBuilt-in templates provided by Copera for common use cases (project tracking, CRM, HR, etc.)
Shared TemplatesTemplates created by other members of your workspace and shared with the team
My TemplatesTemplates you have saved from your own boards

Using a Template

  1. Select the Template option in the Create Board dialog.
  2. Browse or search through the template categories displayed in the left panel.
  3. Click on a template to preview its structure --- you will see the tables, columns, and layout it includes.
  4. Click to select the template you want to use.
  5. Enter a name, optional description, and add members just like creating from scratch.
  6. Click Create Board. Copera clones the template structure into a new board.
tip

You can save any of your existing boards as a template from the board settings menu. This is useful for standardizing workflows across your team.

Importing from Monday.com

Choose Integration to migrate a board from Monday.com into Copera. This is helpful when transitioning your team from Monday.com or when you want to consolidate project management into a single platform.

How the Monday.com Import Works

  1. Select the Integration option in the Create Board dialog.
  2. Connect your Monday.com account by providing your API credentials.
  3. Copera fetches a list of your Monday.com boards. Select the one you want to import.
  4. Map Monday.com users to Copera workspace members so that assigned items transfer correctly.
  5. Click Import. Copera creates a new board with the structure and data from your Monday.com board, including columns, rows, and values.

The import runs as a background job, so you can continue working while it processes. You will receive a notification when the import is complete.

note

The Monday.com import supports most standard column types. Some advanced or custom Monday.com column types may be mapped to the closest Copera equivalent or imported as text.

Importing from a Backup File

Choose Import to restore a board from a Copera backup file (.bcp format). This is useful for transferring boards between workspaces or restoring a previously exported board.

  1. Select the Import option in the Create Board dialog.
  2. Drag and drop your .bcp file into the upload area, or click to browse for the file.
  3. Copera processes the file and creates the board with all its tables, columns, rows, and data intact.

After Creating Your Board

Once your board is created, you can immediately:

  • Add columns to define the data structure for your table. See Field Types for details on each column type.
  • Create rows to start adding items and data.
  • Switch views to see your data in List, Kanban, Gantt, Timeline, Calendar, Form, or Workload layout. See Views.
  • Set up automations to reduce manual work. See Boards Overview.
  • Add more tables to organize different categories of data within the same board. See Tables.
  • Configure permissions to control who can see, edit, or manage the board. See Boards Overview.
