Message Actions

Every message in a Copera text channel comes with a set of quick actions that let you respond, organize, and manage conversations without typing a single word. These actions appear when you hover over a message, giving you instant access to the tools you need to keep discussions productive and organized.

The Message Action Bar

When you move your cursor over any message in a text channel, a compact action bar appears at the top-right corner of the message. This bar contains icon buttons for the most commonly used actions. For less frequent actions, an overflow menu (the three-dot icon) provides additional options.

The action bar is designed to stay out of the way until you need it --- it only appears on hover and disappears as soon as you move away.

Available Actions

Create Task

Click the task icon to turn the content of a message into a board row. A dialog opens where you can select the target board and table, set the task title (pre-filled from the message content), and save it. This is a fast way to convert discussion items into trackable work without leaving the channel.

React with Emoji

Click the emoji icon to open the emoji picker. Select any emoji to add a reaction to the message. Reactions appear below the message content and show a count when multiple people react with the same emoji. Reactions are a lightweight way to acknowledge a message, vote on a decision, or add context without sending a new message.

If you want to add another reaction to a message that already has reactions, you can click the + button next to the existing reactions.

Start a Thread

Click the thread icon to open a threaded reply on the message. Threads keep focused side conversations contained so the main channel stays clean. This action is available on messages in group channels that do not already have an active thread. For more details, see Threads.

Pin Message

Click the pin icon to pin or unpin the message. Pinned messages are highlighted in the channel and can be accessed from the channel header, making them easy to find later. Use pins for important announcements, decisions, or reference material that the team needs to revisit.

Reply

Click the reply icon to quote the message in your next reply. The original message appears as a reference block above your new message, giving everyone in the channel clear context about what you are responding to. Clicking the quoted reference scrolls the channel to the original message.

Forward

Click the forward icon to send the message to another channel or direct message conversation. Forwarding preserves the original content and shows a label indicating that the message was forwarded, along with the source it came from.

Copy Text

For text messages, click the copy icon to copy the message content to your clipboard. This is useful when you need to paste a message into a document, email, or another tool.

Overflow Menu Actions

Click the three-dot icon at the end of the action bar to access additional options:

Edit Message

If you are the author of the message, you can select Edit to modify its content. An inline editor replaces the message text, letting you make changes in place. Press Enter to save or Escape to cancel. Edited messages display an "edited" indicator so others know the content was updated.

Delete Message

If you are the author or a channel admin, you can select Delete to remove the message. A confirmation prompt appears to prevent accidental deletions. Deleted messages are permanently removed from the channel.

Download Attachment

For messages that contain a file or media attachment, the Download option lets you save the file to your device.

Mark as Unread

Select Mark as unread to reset the read indicator on the channel to this message. The channel will appear as having unread messages in the sidebar, which is handy when you want to come back to a message later.

Emoji Reactions in Detail

Emoji reactions deserve a closer look because they serve as a lightweight communication tool:

  • Adding a reaction --- Hover over the message and click the emoji icon in the action bar, then pick an emoji.
  • Multiple reactions --- A single message can have many different emoji reactions. Each unique emoji shows a count of how many people reacted with it.
  • Removing a reaction --- Click your own reaction again to remove it.
  • Seeing who reacted --- Hover over any reaction badge to see the names of the people who reacted with that emoji.
tip

Emoji reactions are a great way to run quick polls. Post a question and ask your team to react with specific emojis for each option --- for example, a thumbs-up for "yes" and thumbs-down for "no."
