Channel Customization

Copera channels are not one-size-fits-all. Admins can tailor the name, description, icon, and behavior of each channel to match its purpose and make it instantly recognizable in the sidebar.

Editing the Channel Name

The channel name is the primary identifier that appears in the sidebar and at the top of the conversation. To change it:

  1. Open the channel and click the channel name in the header to open the Channel Details dialog.
  2. In the Overview tab, click the current name to enter edit mode.
  3. Type the new name and press Enter or click outside the field to save.

Only channel admins (and workspace administrators) can rename a channel.

tip

Use clear, descriptive names that include the team or project context --- for example, engineering-backend or q1-marketing-campaign. This makes channels easy to find via the Command Palette.

Setting a Channel Description

The description provides additional context about a channel's purpose. It appears in the channel details dialog and helps members understand what the channel is for before they start posting.

  1. Open the Channel Details dialog.
  2. In the Overview tab, click the description area.
  3. Enter or update the description and save.

Choosing a Channel Icon

Each channel can have a custom emoji icon that replaces the default # symbol in the sidebar. A well-chosen icon makes channels visually distinct and easier to scan.

  1. Open the Channel Details dialog.
  2. Click the current icon (or the placeholder) in the Overview tab.
  3. Select an emoji from the picker.

Pinned Messages

Any message in a channel can be pinned to make it easy to find later. Pinned messages are accessible from the channel header and serve as a lightweight bulletin board for important links, decisions, or announcements.

  • To pin a message, hover over it, click the more options menu (three dots), and select Pin message.
  • To unpin a message, open the pinned messages panel and click the unpin icon next to the message.

Channel Archiving and Deletion

When a channel is no longer needed, admins have two options:

  • Leave the channel --- If you are a regular member, you can leave the channel. The channel remains available to other participants.
  • Delete the channel --- If you are the channel owner or a workspace administrator, you can permanently delete the channel from the Danger Zone section of the channel details dialog.
warning

Deleting a channel is permanent. All messages, files, and history in the channel are removed and cannot be recovered. Consider transferring ownership or leaving the channel if you simply want to step away.

Meeting Channel Customization

Meeting channels have additional settings beyond what text channels offer:

  • Language --- Set the default language for transcription and AI summaries.
  • Auto-transcription --- Enable automatic transcription when a session starts.
  • Transcription access --- Control who can view transcriptions (all participants, admins only, or specific users).
  • Email summaries --- Choose who receives an email summary after each session.

These settings are found in the Transcription tab of the meeting channel details dialog.

Best Practices

  • Name channels consistently. Establish a naming convention across your workspace (e.g., team-topic or project-area) and stick to it.
  • Write meaningful descriptions. A one-sentence description can save new members from guessing what a channel is about.
  • Pin sparingly. Only pin messages that truly need to stay visible. Too many pinned messages dilute their value.
  • Clean up old channels. Periodically delete or leave channels that are no longer active to keep the sidebar manageable.
