Command Palette

The Copera Command Palette is an all-in-one search and action hub — opened with Ctrl+K (Windows/Linux) or Cmd+K (Mac) — that combines workspace-wide search, 91 commands across four categories, eight single-character prefix shortcuts, and inline actions in a single keyboard-driven interface. Instead of clicking through menus, you open the palette, type what you need, and act immediately. Find a document, join a voice meeting, create a task, or send a message in seconds. Every palette command is also available to Bankai voice in Command Mode, so you can run actions by speaking.

Whether you want to search for a document, join a voice meeting, create a task, or send a quick message, the Command Palette gets you there in seconds.

Opening the Command Palette

You can open the Command Palette from anywhere in Copera using one of these keyboard shortcuts:

ShortcutWhen it works
Cmd+K (Mac) / Ctrl+K (Windows/Linux)Works everywhere, even when you are typing in a text field
/ (forward slash)When you are not focused on a text input or editor

Press Esc at any time to close the palette.

tip

Cmd+K / Ctrl+K is the most reliable shortcut because it works regardless of where your cursor is. The / shortcut is a quick alternative when you are reading a page or browsing the sidebar, but it will not activate while you are typing in a message or document.

Two Modes: Search and Commands

The Command Palette operates in two modes. Which mode you are in depends on whether you start your query with the > character.

Search Mode (Default)

When you open the palette and start typing normally, you are in Search Mode. This searches across everything in your workspace:

  • Channels -- text, meeting, and classroom channels
  • People and direct messages -- find anyone in your workspace
  • Documents -- search by title and content
  • Boards and tasks -- find boards, tables, and individual tasks
  • Files -- search files stored in Drive
  • Emails -- search across your connected inboxes
  • Meetings and transcriptions -- find past meetings and their notes
  • AI conversations -- search your Ask Copera AI chats
  • Messages -- search within channel conversations

Results appear grouped by type. Each group initially shows up to three results with a Show more option to expand the full list.

Command Mode

Type > at the beginning of your query to switch to Command Mode. This shows a list of all available actions you can run directly from the palette, organized into four categories:

  • Navigation -- go to specific sections of Copera (Chat, Documents, Boards, Drive, Inbox, etc.)
  • Creation -- create new documents, channels, direct messages, tasks, emails
  • Actions -- join a meeting channel, send a message, invite a member
  • Utility -- toggle dark/light mode, toggle sidebar, enter fullscreen, switch workspace, change language, copy the current page URL, view keyboard shortcuts

Type > followed by any part of a command name to filter the list. For example, type > join to find the "Join Meeting Channel" command.

tip

You do not need to type the full command name. Typing just a few letters is enough -- for example, > tog will match both "Toggle Theme" and "Toggle Sidebar".

Prefix Shortcuts

Prefix shortcuts are single characters you can type to instantly filter your search to a specific type of content. This is the fastest way to narrow down what you are looking for.

PrefixSearches forExample
#Channels (text, meeting, classroom)#general finds the "general" channel
@People and direct messages@alice finds Alice and your DM with her
/Documents/roadmap finds documents with "roadmap"
!Email and inboxes!invoice searches your emails for "invoice"
$Files in Drive$report finds files named "report"
=Boards=marketing finds boards with "marketing"
&Meetings and transcriptions&standup finds meetings and notes about "standup"
?AI conversations?budget finds AI chats about "budget"

Just type the prefix character followed by your search term. The palette shows a label next to the search field confirming which filter is active.

note

You can also use keyword prefixes like doc:, mail:, board:, row:, file:, and meeting: if you prefer typing words instead of symbols. Both styles work the same way.

Quick Actions

When you first open the Command Palette (before typing anything), you will see a set of Quick Actions that let you take common actions immediately:

  • Send Message -- send a quick message to a channel or person
  • Create Document -- start a new document
  • Create Channel -- create a new text or meeting channel
  • New Direct Message -- start a conversation with someone
  • Compose Email -- open a new email draft

Click any of these or use the Arrow keys to select one and press Enter to activate it.

tip

After you start using the palette regularly, the Quick Actions section automatically shows your most recently used commands instead of the default list. This makes it even faster to repeat actions you perform often.

Pre-expanded Entities

When you use a command that requires a target (like "Join Meeting Channel" or "Send Message"), the Command Palette shows you the available targets right away -- you do not need to navigate through extra steps.

For example, when you type > join, the palette immediately shows all your meeting channels. You see results like:

  • Join Huddle Room
  • Join Team Standup
  • Join All-Hands Meeting

Select the one you want and press Enter to act. This "pre-expanded" approach means every item you see is immediately actionable -- one click or one Enter press to get things done.

Inline Commands

Some commands let you complete the entire action without leaving the palette. These are called inline commands because you provide all the needed information right in the search bar.

Quick Send Message

  1. Open the palette and type > send message
  2. The palette shows channels, DMs, and email inboxes as targets
  3. Select a recipient
  4. Type your message and press Enter to send

After sending, a brief notification appears at the bottom of your screen with an Undo option. You have 10 seconds to undo the send if you change your mind.

Quick Create Task

  1. Type > create task (or > new row)
  2. Select the board where you want to create the task
  3. Type the task title and press Enter

Quick Join Meeting

  1. Type > join to see all available meeting channels
  2. Select the channel you want and press Enter to connect

Graduated Search Expansion

To keep results fast, the Command Palette initially skips searching through slower sources like email. When your search returns fewer than five results, the palette shows a hint at the bottom:

Search emails for "your query" -- press Tab to expand

Press Tab to expand the search to include email and other sources. This way, you get fast results most of the time, with the option to dig deeper when needed.

Keyboard Navigation

The Command Palette is fully keyboard-driven. You never need to use your mouse.

KeyAction
Arrow Up / Arrow DownMove through the list of results
EnterExecute the selected action or open the selected result
EscClose the palette
TabExpand search to include email (when the hint appears)
>Switch to Command Mode (type at the beginning of your query)

Selection wraps around -- pressing Arrow Down on the last item takes you back to the top, and Arrow Up on the first item jumps to the bottom.

Voice Integration

If you use Copera's voice assistant (Bankai), you can trigger Command Palette actions by voice while in Commands mode. Say "Bankai" to activate the voice assistant, switch to Commands mode, and speak the command you want to run. The voice assistant will execute it through the palette automatically.

This is useful for hands-free workflows -- for example, saying "join standup" while in Commands mode will connect you to the standup meeting channel without touching the keyboard.

Tips and Best Practices

tip

Use prefix shortcuts for speed. If you know you are looking for a channel, type # before your query. If you are looking for a person, type @. This skips irrelevant results and finds what you need faster.

tip

Type > followed by a command name and its target in one line. For example, type > join huddle to immediately see and select the Huddle channel -- no extra steps needed.

tip

The palette remembers your recent commands. Open it without typing anything to see your five most recent actions. This is the fastest way to repeat something you just did.

tip

Use Cmd+K from anywhere. Even if you are in the middle of writing a message or editing a document, Cmd+K (Mac) or Ctrl+K (Windows/Linux) will always open the palette.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I search only within a specific type of content?

Use a prefix shortcut. For example, type # to search only channels, @ to search only people and DMs, or / to search only documents. See the Prefix Shortcuts table for all available prefixes.

What is the difference between Search Mode and Command Mode?

Search Mode (the default) searches through your workspace content -- documents, channels, messages, files, and more. Command Mode (activated by typing >) shows actions you can run, like creating a document, toggling dark mode, or joining a meeting channel.

Can I use the Command Palette with just the keyboard?

Yes. The palette is designed for keyboard-only use. Open it with Cmd+K / Ctrl+K, type your query, navigate with Arrow keys, select with Enter, and close with Esc.

Why do some searches not include email results?

Email search is slower than other content types, so the palette skips it by default to keep results fast. If you get fewer than five results, you will see a "Search emails" hint -- press Tab to include email in the search. You can also type ! before your query to search emails directly.

Can I undo a message sent from the palette?

Yes. When you send a message using the Quick Send action, a toast notification appears with an Undo button. You have 10 seconds to click it and cancel the send.

How do I see all keyboard shortcuts?

Open the palette, type > keyboard shortcuts, and press Enter. This opens a dialog listing all shortcuts across Copera -- including Chat, Editor, Boards, Drive, and Voice.
