Quick Navigation
The Copera Command Palette is the fastest way to move around your workspace, using eight single-character prefix shortcuts to scope your search: # for channels, @ for people and DMs, / for documents, ! for emails, $ for files, = for boards, & for meetings, and ? for AI conversations. Press Cmd+K (Mac) or Ctrl+K (Windows/Linux) to open the palette, type a prefix and a few characters, and jump directly to what you need. This guide covers every prefix, how general search works across all content types, how to join meetings in one step with > join, and power-user tips for keyboard-only workflows.
Opening the Palette
Press Cmd+K (Mac) or Ctrl+K (Windows/Linux) to open the Command Palette from anywhere in Copera. If you are not focused on a text input, you can also press the / key.
When the palette opens, the cursor is automatically placed in the search field. If you have recently used commands, they appear immediately before you type anything, giving you one-click access to the places you visit most.
Navigating with Prefix Shortcuts
The fastest way to find something specific is to use a prefix shortcut -- a single character that tells the palette exactly what type of content to search.
Finding Channels — #
Type # followed by the channel name to search only channels. This includes text channels, meeting channels, and classroom channels.
Examples:
#general-- finds the "general" channel#standup-- finds channels with "standup" in the name#(by itself) -- shows all channels you have access to
When you select a channel and press Enter, Copera navigates directly to that channel.
For meeting channels, selecting the result takes you to the channel page. If you want to join the meeting call directly, use the > join command instead (see Joining a Meeting below).
Finding People and DMs — @
Type @ followed by a person's name to search for workspace members and existing direct message conversations.
Examples:
@alice-- finds Alice and your DM conversation with her@marketing-- finds people with "marketing" in their name or role@(by itself) -- shows all people you can message
The palette searches both your existing DM conversations and all workspace members. Selecting a result does one of two things:
- Existing DM -- takes you directly to that conversation
- Person without an existing DM -- opens a new direct message with them
Finding Documents — /
Type / followed by a keyword to search through document titles and content.
Examples:
/roadmap-- finds documents with "roadmap" in the title or body/Q2 budget-- finds documents mentioning "Q2 budget"
When a document matches on its body content (not just the title), a short snippet of the matching text appears below the result so you can verify it is the right one before opening it.
The / prefix works when you are not focused inside a text editor. If you are editing a document and press /, it will open the editor's slash commands menu instead. Use Cmd+K / Ctrl+K first to open the palette, then type / to scope to documents.
Finding Emails — !
Type ! followed by a keyword to search through your connected email inboxes.
Examples:
!invoice-- finds emails about invoices!meeting notes-- finds emails with "meeting notes"
Email search is more thorough than the default search because it includes email content that is normally skipped for speed. Using the ! prefix automatically includes this deeper search.
Finding Files — $
Type $ followed by a file name to search files stored in your Drive.
Examples:
$report-- finds files named "report"$presentation-- finds files with "presentation" in the name
Selecting a file opens it in the Drive file viewer.
Finding Boards — =
Type = followed by a board name to search through your boards.
Examples:
=marketing-- finds boards with "marketing" in the name=sprint-- finds boards related to sprints
Selecting a board navigates directly to that board's page.
Finding Meetings and Transcriptions — &
Type & followed by a keyword to search meeting channels and their transcription notes.
Examples:
&standup-- finds standup meetings and their transcription notes&weekly-- finds weekly meeting channels and related transcriptions
This prefix searches both the meeting channel names and the text content of meeting transcription notes, making it useful for finding discussions from past meetings.
Finding AI Conversations — ?
Type ? followed by a keyword to search through your Ask Copera AI conversation history.
Examples:
?budget analysis-- finds AI chats where you discussed budget analysis?code review-- finds AI conversations about code review
Selecting a result opens that AI conversation so you can continue where you left off.
Quick Reference Card
Keep this table handy until the shortcuts become second nature:
| I want to find... | I type... |
|---|---|
| A channel | #channel name |
| A person or DM | @person name |
| A document | /search term |
| An email | !search term |
| A file in Drive | $file name |
| A board | =board name |
| A meeting or transcript | &search term |
| An AI conversation | ?search term |
| Anything (general search) | Just type without a prefix |
| A command to run | > command name |
Searching Without a Prefix
If you are not sure where something lives, just type your search term without any prefix. The palette will search across all content types simultaneously and group the results by type.
Results are grouped under headers like Channels, Documents, People, Boards, Files, and so on. Each group initially shows up to three results. Click Show more under a group to expand and see all matching items of that type.
Joining a Meeting
The Command Palette offers two ways to get to a meeting channel:
Option 1: Search and Navigate
Type # or & followed by the meeting name. Select the result and press Enter to navigate to the meeting channel page. From there, you can join the call using the channel's join button.
Option 2: Join Directly with a Command
- Type > join to switch to Command Mode and see all meeting channels
- Browse the list or continue typing to filter (e.g., > join standup)
- Select the channel and press Enter to connect to the call immediately
The second option is faster because it connects you to the call in one step without navigating to the channel page first.
How Results Are Ranked
When you search, Copera ranks results by relevance. Several factors affect ranking:
- How closely the title matches your query -- exact matches rank highest
- Recent activity -- items you accessed recently appear higher
- Content matches -- when the body text of a document or message matches, a snippet is shown
Results within each group maintain their relevance ranking, so the most relevant item in each group always appears first.
Tips for Power Users
Leverage Recent Items
Open the palette without typing anything to see your most recently used commands and actions. This is the fastest way to return to something you were just working on -- no typing required.
Combine Prefix with Search
Prefix shortcuts and search text work together seamlessly. There is no space required between the prefix and your query:
#genimmediately filters to channels matching "gen"@alimmediately filters to people matching "al"/roadimmediately filters to documents matching "road"
Use Command Mode for Actions
If you want to do something (create, send, join, toggle) rather than find something, start with >:
- > new document -- creates a document
- > join standup -- joins a meeting channel
- > toggle theme -- switches dark/light mode
- > zen mode -- enters a distraction-free fullscreen mode
Chain Command and Target
Many commands accept a target right after the command name. Instead of selecting the command first and then picking a target, type everything in one line:
- > join huddle -- skips the command list and goes straight to showing "Huddle" channels
- > new dm alice -- immediately shows Alice as a DM target
This one-line approach is the fastest way to execute any command that needs a target.
Use Fuzzy Matching
You do not need to type exact names. The palette uses fuzzy matching, so partial words work well:
#genmatches "General"@smmatches "John Smith"/roadmatches "Q3 Roadmap"
Keyboard-Only Workflow
You can navigate your entire workspace without touching the mouse:
- Press Cmd+K / Ctrl+K to open
- Type your search (with or without a prefix)
- Use Arrow Up / Arrow Down to navigate results
- Press Enter to select
- Press Esc to dismiss
This cycle takes just seconds and keeps you in a focused, keyboard-driven workflow.
View All Keyboard Shortcuts
Open the palette, type > keyboard shortcuts, and press Enter to see a complete reference of keyboard shortcuts across Copera -- including shortcuts for Chat, the Document Editor, Boards, Drive, and Voice.
Multi-Language Support
The Command Palette works in all of Copera's supported languages. Command names, search results, and prefix labels automatically adapt to your current language setting.
You can even switch languages from the palette itself: type > change language and press Enter to cycle to the next available language.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I search inside message content?
Yes. When you type a general search (without a prefix), the palette searches through message content in your channels. Matching messages appear under the Messages group with a snippet showing the matching text. Selecting a message takes you directly to that message in its channel.
What happens if I type a prefix and then delete it?
The palette immediately switches back to general search. Prefix filtering is driven entirely by what is in the search field -- there is no sticky mode to undo.
Why do I see only three results per group?
To keep the results scannable, each content type group shows up to three results initially. Click Show more under any group to expand it and see all matching results of that type.
Can I navigate to a specific task on a board?
Yes. Search for the task name without a prefix, or use = to search within boards. Task results include the board and table they belong to, and selecting one opens the task detail directly.
How do I find a file I uploaded recently?
Type $ followed by part of the file name. If you remember which channel you uploaded it in, you can also search by the file name without a prefix -- Drive files appear in the general search results.
